TL;DR: Piwik PRO is a fantastic analytics platform. And as privacy-advocates ourselves, we’re delighted to see another privacy-first solution doing well, even if the suite doesn’t comply with ePrivacy standards without a cookie banner.
The company is however clearly posturing for enterprise clients, and subscribers to their standard package don't get access to customer support or many of their features. Paid packages are expensive and there’s the issue of the free plan being insufficient for small businesses and the paid plans being financially unviable for all but those with fat wallets.
Compared with TWIPLA, both platforms do offer website statistical analysis and offer attractive packages for enterprise clients. Still, there are some differences. Piwik PRO provides consent management and customer data modules that are absent from TWIPLA, but they don’t offer our range of visitor behavior analytics or visitor communication. Piwik PRO costs are built around website visitor event numbers while TWIPLA’s subscription milestones are pageview numbers and feature usage volume. They also have a limited white label service, their data retention policy is on the low side, and their user interface is a little complicated for some.
If that’s not enough information for you, then keep reading! Below, you’ll find details on Piwik PRO’s pricing structure, its packages, and all its features. These are all analyzed side by side with TWIPLA so that you can see how the two analytics platforms compare and understand which option is right for your business.
Piwik PRO is a privacy-conscious analytics suite that also offers a Tag Manager and Consent Manager, as well as a Customer Data Platform. This makes it ideal for businesses who have been using Google Analytics but want to switch to a GDPR-compliant alternative - and particularly since the two options are very similar in terms of technical implementation.
The company was founded as Piwik in 2007 as an open-source analytics project by Mattieu Aubry and Maciej Zawadziński. By 2013, they had also released Piwik Pro as a premium alternative that would bring revenue into the organization. In 2016, Piwik Pro separated from Piwik; the original platform was officially renamed Matomo two years later, and retains the original company’s open-source principles. Today, Piwik PRO is being used by approximately 40,000 live websites, and there’s an additional 30,000 or so sites that used them in the past. Matomo is also going from strength to strength, and we’ve covered this analytics platform elsewhere.
Piwik PRO has four main modules:
Awards from software review sites are a good way to gauge product functionality. Piwik PRO has won awards from SoftwareSuggest. But away from this company, other software portals aren't displaying any badges for Piwik PRO on their websites - something that is relatively rare for an option that has been on the market for so long.
Piwik PRO reviews are good across all the main software review sites. Users find it very easy to use, and particularly for those who have migrated from Google Analytics. People like the simple interface and fast loading times, and the Consent Manager module comes particularly highly recommended. They're also a lot of love for their privacy credentials as a whole, something that saves businesses huge amounts of time and manpower.
However, there are still some common concerns, and these generally focus on the high costs involved and access restrictions for those that don’t go for the Enterprise package. This extends to customer support, which isn’t available to most users, and the Tag Manager which seems to lag behind alternatives on the market and lacks many key tags and triggers.
Users are also often disappointed by the limitation of their features. eCommerce, for instance, comes up again and again because of it's lack of key event tracking such as checkout, payment, removal from cart, etc. Custom events can also be difficult to set up for many, and it's not very easy to integrate the platform with other tools.

Since Piwik PRO analytics is a proudly privacy-conscious software suite, you’ll find a side-by-side table of the best similarly-focused alternatives to it below. But first, some information about the different elements included:
All the Piwik PRO alternatives covered below obviously provide analytics features. However, every platform is different and they won’t all have the tools that your business requires. Each of the options covered below will have developed different technologies or compliance measures to meet privacy standards. Some even still use cookies to some degree or other. It's also important to look at the features themselves, with some of the key ones being custom dashboards, industry performance benchmarking, and data onto the businesses that visitors associate with. Data retention is also important, particularly when doing historical performance analysis.
This is an advanced category of analytics tools that isn’t available from every provider. It includes features like session recordings, conversion funnels, and heatmaps. It also includes event tracking but since Piwik PRO offers these features in one of its main modules, we’ve separated it out in the table to give you a better snapshot of what their suite does and doesn’t have.
These features are relatively rare in the analytics market. However, they exist to help businesses to confirm website performance using real customer feedback rather than data alone. And if they’re included within an analytics suite, users will also benefit from rich respondent insights that they can put to wider use.
This is one of Piwik PRO’s modules. It provides event tracking functionality - a key visitor behavior analytics tool, but they have also incorporated other elements such as third-party integration pixel management.
This is one of Piwik PRO’s modules. It’s not a standard website analytics feature. However, it helps their users meet ePrivacy requirements around analytics use, and it’s included in the table so that you can see how the other top privacy-first solutions compare.
Privacy-first analytics is a fast-growing martech sector given the impact of data privacy legislation, technological developments towards user privacy, and the value that people place on data security. The right option can even enable businesses to remove their cookie banner (if other tools in the stack follow similar principles). However, it’s important to remember that there are different levels to privacy compliance. ePrivacy is the benchmark for complete global compliance, with GDPR a level below this. If analytics platforms don’t have cookieless tracking technology and do not meet the highest compliance level, this means that businesses have to integrate a website cookie banner and answer other compliance responsibilities.
Enterprise clients present a special kind of challenge for many analytics platforms due to their size, complexity, and specific demands. They typically handle vast amounts of data across diverse departments and locations, necessitating robust, scalable, and secure solutions that can integrate seamlessly with existing systems. Additionally, enterprise clients often require advanced features like customizable dashboards, real-time analytics, comprehensive data governance, compliance with industry regulations, and dedicated support. These needs demand sophisticated, flexible, and reliable analytics platforms capable of delivering actionable insights efficiently and at scale.
This service enables businesses to remove the analytics platform’s branding and sell analytic features as their own. SaaS companies can use it to enhance their service provision, while marketing agencies can use it to better manage clients. Both benefit from white label analytics through differentiation and the creation of an additional revenue stream.
Impartial software review portals and user reviews are obviously crucial when choosing an analytics platform because they provide real-world insight into the platform's performance, usability, and reliability. The overall score offers a quick assessment of user satisfaction, helping to identify top-performing platforms. Equally important is the number of reviews, as a higher count indicates broader adoption and more comprehensive feedback, reducing the risk of bias and highlighting consistent strengths and weaknesses. Together, these factors help potential buyers make informed decisions based on collective user experiences rather than solely on vendor claims.
When choosing software, it’s important to look for free trials since it’s great to be able to test things out before opening your wallet. The same goes for freemium packages, but it’s important to remember that these are usually only a long-term option for small websites and lack access to all features. Moving on to paid plans, the monthly costs are a strong indication of whether the platform represents a viable option for your business.

Next, on the Piwik PRO pricing. Piwik Pro analytics has a freemium package called Piwik PRO Core, with Piwik PRO costs coming from paid add ons. They also offer Piwik Pro Enterprise for larger websites. TWIPLA also has a premium option, as well as three paid prescription packages and a Custom Enterprise plan. Below, you’ll find a comparison of the different options available from both companies.
While Piwik PRO doesn’t offer a free trial for any of its paid plans, TWIPLA does - providing new users the opportunity to fully test any package for 30 days.
Piwik PRO does have a free Core plan, which is comparable to TWIPLA’s Free plan and both can be used indefinitely with no payment required.
Piwik PRO is the name for the company’s freemium package. This enables users to track up to 500,000 website actions every month - a term that includes any visitor interactions (including pageviews). If users want to track more actions by website visitors, then they’ll need to start paying for add-ons.
The Piwik Pro pricing model allows its Core subscribers to pay for additional monthly actions up to a limit of 5,000,000, above which businesses would need to move over to their Piwik PRO enterprise. The company has divided these paid website interactions into 16 pricing points, with the costs outlined below:
Core Plan - Monthly Action Threshold | Billed Monthly | Billed Annually | Saving from Annual Billing (per Year) |
500,000 | Free | Free | - |
600,000 | $77.29 | $837.26 ($69.77/mo) | $90.17 |
700,000 | $154.44 | $1,673.09 ($139.42/mo) | $180.16 |
800,000 | $232.67 | $2,508.92 ($209.08/mo) | $283.06 |
900,000 | $310.01 | $3,346.87 ($278.91/mo) | $373.30 |
1,000,000 | $387.50 | $4,186.32 ($348.86/mo) | $463.72 |
1,200,000 | $439.77 | $4,749.49 ($395.79/mo) | $527.72 |
1,400,000 | $492.34 | $5,316.00 ($443.00/mo) | $592.10 |
1,600,000 | $545.02 | $5,866.49 ($488.87/mo) | $656.60 |
1,800,000 | $597.59 | $6,431.32 ($535.94/mo) | $720.98 |
2,000,000 | $650.49 | $7,020.13 ($585.01/mo) | $785.74 |
2,500,000 | $730.63 | $7,867.76 ($655.64/mo) | $875.47 |
3,000,000 | $812.58 | $8,771.95 ($731.00/mo) | $978.95 |
3,500,000 | $893.79 | $9,746.91 ($731.00/mo) | $1,068.69 |
4,000,000 | $966.07 | $10,433.59 ($869.47/mo) | $1,159.29 |
4,500,000 | $1,004.31 | $10,806.94 ($900.58/mo) | $1,206.79 |
5,000,000 | $1,042.29 | $11,257.98 ($938.17/mo) | $1,249.46 |
By contrast, the pricing structure of TWIPLA’s paid plans is built around traffic volume and feature usage rather than website events. Above 50,000 monthly pageviews, businesses should consider a Custom Enterprise package. But away from this, users can move up through the different pricing plans, analyze an increasing number of pageviews, and get more feature credits:

Piwik Pro Enterprise is the plan for larger businesses. Their website advertises a starting-from price of $11,738.81 a year (or just over $978 a month) but further details are only available on request.
And since the quote submission form includes no information about how the Piwik PRO pricing structure is calculated, it’s difficult to say any more without inside information from existing users and this information is not publicly available online. However, we can assume that it’s expensive.
TWIPLA’s Custom Enterprise plan is also fully customizable. Businesses can set the number of monthly pageviews they want to analyze as well as which features and submodules they want to use, and how much. And while this level of customization means that the exact costs will also vary from client to client, we do publicize initial pricing levels that go up with the monthly pageview count that the website(s) experiences:
TWIPLA Custom Enterprise - Monthly Pageviews* | Starting Price (Billed Monthly) | Starting Price (Billed Annually) |
50,000 < 100,000 | $77.99 | $748.68 ($62.39/mo) |
100,000 < 200,000 | $154.00 | $1,478.40 ($123.20/mo) |

Piwik Pro Core is their standard package. The free version enables users to analyze up to 500,000 website interactions each month, but this threshold can be increased to 5,000,000 with paid add ons.
User data is hosted within the EU and the company holds on to it for 14 months - a fairly short time period when compared with alternatives on the market.
And unfortunately, subscribers are provided with no support or onboarding assistance beyond their community portal. Nor does this package include single sign-on (SSO), a service level agreement (SLA), or white label option.
By contrast, TWIPLA’s free plan provides insights into website performance from 400 monthly pageviews. Unlike Piwik PRO, users can also access much more of the tools without opening their wallets and data is retained forever. Here’s a comparison of the two freemium packages side by side:
Piwik PRO Free | TWIPLA Free |
Three modules: Analytics, Tag Manager, and Consent Manager | Four modules: Website Statistics, Visitor Behavior Analytics, Visitor Communication, and eCommerce |
500,000 monthly actions for free | Full dataset on 400 monthly pageviews |
14-month data retention | Indefinite data retention |
Cloud hosting with Microsoft Azure in Germany | Maximum Server Protection: Our data centers located in Germany are regularly audited by authorities and hold ISO 27001 certification |
Support from community forum | Support from community forum and direct customer support |
Piwik PRO Core (Free) can be enhanced by paying for add-ons. These increase the threshold of website interactions that the platform will analyze each month. Users can pay to increase this threshold up to 5,000,000 monthly actions, after which they’d need to move up to the Piwik PRO Enterprise plan.
By contrast, TWIPLA offers three paid plans (excluding the Custom Enterprise option). These subscriptions increase the threshold of website pageviews that the platform will analyze each month, and also give users access to an increasing number of feature credits each month. Some advanced features like Custom Country Data, Company Reveal, and Visitor Segments also become available.
Piwik Pro Enterprise is the company’s flagship package, and everything about their different pricing structures suggests that they are prioritizing this customer segment.
As with their Core plan, user data can be hosted in the EU but enterprise clients also have the option to use data centers in the US and Hong Kong. Data is retained for up to 25 months depending on contract specificities, but this still feels fairly short.
Enterprise customers also get more offerings and customer support - something that is sorely lacking from the Piwik PRO Core plan(s).
By contrast, TWIPLA Custom Enterprise enables users to customize their required monthly pageview volume, as well as the features that they need.
Data is hosted in the EU. Users will also benefit from TWIPLA’s Content Delivery Network, which currently includes nine data centers in strategically chosen locations around the world.
As a comparison, you’ll find below the key features that Piwik PRO advertises for its Enterprise plan, alongside the equivalent TWIPLA Custom Enterprise features:
Piwik PRO Enterprise | TWIPLA Custom Enterprise |
Up to four modules: Analytics, Tag Manager, Consent Manager, and Customer Data Platform | Four modules: Website Statistics, Visitor Behavior Analytics, Visitor Communication, and eCommerce |
From 2m up to 4bn monthly actions | From 50,000 monthly pageviews upwards |
Up to 25 months data retention | Indefinite data retention |
Cloud or private cloud hosting using numerous global data centers, including US-owned servers | Maximum Server Protection: Our data centers located in Germany are regularly audited by authorities and hold ISO 27001 certification |
Dedicated technical support, implementation, and onboarding | Dedicated technical support, implementation, and onboarding |
To better understand Piwik PRO analytics as a whole, you’ll want to open up the four main modules and see what’s under the hood, something that we’ve done here.
However, we've not included Piwik PRO's consent management since this is not a module that TWIPLA offers, or has anything similar to.
Ultimately, you'd be impressed by the range of different features on offer. You’ll find a table further down that outlines what’s available for Core and Enterprise users, and how this functionality compares with TWIPLA. But first, we’ve highlighted some key characteristics that need further clarification:
Piwik Pro runs on ClickHouse, a database that has been designed specifically as an analytics engine. This means that the platform runs very quickly, without the lag that you can expect using alternatives like Matomo and Google Analytics.
Piwik Pro enables users to track SPAs. These are applications that load a single HTML page and dynamically update the content as the user interacts with the app. This approach minimizes page reloads and provides a more fluid and responsive user interface, resembling the experience of a desktop or mobile app. Examples of SPAs include Gmail, Google Maps, and Facebook. However, it’s important to note that Piwik Pro’s technical implementation here is much more laboursome than for non-SPA sites.
Piwik PRO reports come ready made with key performance insights on a website’s audience, traffic, behavior, and conversions. Users can also create custom reports around granular metrics and dimensions that are important to their business. These custom reports use a simple drag-and-drop interface, which makes them very easy to use. The platform also includes custom reports templates for funnels, which are really useful for optimizing the flow of users towards key website objectives.
Piwik PRO gives users access to raw data via their API at no additional cost. This fits nicely with their privacy credentials and desire to provide their users with real ownership of their data. It means that users can export their raw data and use it outside of Piwik PRO, which is great for flexibility, independence, and data utility.
Piwik PRO provides users with a wide range of integration options - something that probably has its roots in the company’s open-source origins. This means, for instance, that businesses can easily pipe their data into a third-party dashboard or Google Ads to get a more comprehensive view of digital performance and visitor behavior.

TWIPLA is a complete website intelligence solution, and this means it has many features that are unavailable to Piwik Pro users. This includes the full range of visitor behavior analytics features, as well as communication options.
Privacy-wise, TWIPLA lacks the consent management tools but it is ePrivacy-compliant. This means that - unlike Piwik PRO - it meets the requirements of every data privacy law on the planet.
The privacy settings are also much more customizable. Users can set a different privacy level for any visitor country of origin, while the dual tracking code options give them the opportunity to collect a core data fundament on every website visitor if required. To summarize, Piwik PRO analytics is a great privacy-first choice for companies looking to move away from Google Analytics. Piwik PRO reviews are also generally very good, with users impressed with the ease of use. Implementation and onboarding is pretty simple, and it has most of the metrics and dimensions that they’ll be familiar with.
However, it is more geared to Enterprise clients. Piwik PRO core users can only access three of the four main modules. They also get no customer support, and a much shorter data retention period.
Even the Piwik PRO costs of the core package are a little expensive for small businesses, creating a space in their market where the free plan is too limited and the paid plans are out of reach financially.
But overall, it’s a strong analytics suite and we’re expecting big things from them in the future.
